Tiny jewel of the Pyreenees is the fiercely independent Principality of Andorra. Part Spanish in spirit but not quite in Spain, part French in spirit but not quite in
France, Andorra sits above and between the two, an exotic mingling of their cultures with its own unique style, bargains galore because of its duty-free status, and fabulous skiing just a couple of hours by airport transfer coach from the airports of North-east Spain, and a similar transfer time by shuttle bus, minibus and taxi from airports of south west France.
Low-cost airlines fly into Barcelona and Gerona in Spain, two to three hours away by airport transfer. They also fly into Toulouse in France, a similar distance by Andorra airport transfer bus or in the case of Ryanair, the slightly-nearer Carcassonne.
Capital of Andorra is Andorra La Vella, ideal for the skier who wants to try out all the principality’s ski stations. The furthest is a mere 18 kilometers by coach or bus, the nearest within 15 minutes so. Yet the capital offers a much wider range of shopping, dining and nightlife than the resorts themselves.
Andorra Ski Resorts
Arcalis - Most remote and often overlooked by visitors yet a reasonable taxi or bus transfer from the capital, Arcalis is the choice of locals, limited in extent but good skiing and reliable snow. Pal Arinsal. Quiet, picturesque Pal mountain village offers simple après ski pleasures but a good wooded ski area linking to Arinsal, where rapid development has hidden some of the charms of the original Catalan slate and stone village. Arinsal though offers ideal conditions for the beginner/ intermediate.
Pas de la Casa - Grau Roig. Right on the French border, Pas is first drop off for Andorra airport transfers from France, a purpose-built ski resort of limited charm, its shops piled high with duty free goods, but great nightlife for the young. For the skier it offers the biggest ski area and highest lift-served terrain in Andorra. Thanks to a link with lower-down Soldeu, combined pistes total 186 km, up there with big-name Alpine resorts like Kitzbühel and Les Deux Alpes.
Soldeu - El Tarter. Low prices and lively bars compensate for the grim look of the village of Soldeu. El Tarter offers lots of accommodation in a quieter atmosphere. The skiing they share is largely on open mountainsides but runs go through woods back to all of the resort lift bases. The link with Pas de la Casa means experienced skiers have access to all the slopes they could wish for. Again an early stop-off for Andorra airport transfers from France but still a reasonable Andorra airport shuttle transfer journey from Spain.
Overview Andorra has for years had a reputation as the ideal low-cost ski destination. Increasing ski areas and high standards of lifts and facilities together with improved inter-links mean it compares very well with Alps destinations. And low-cost airline access to nearby airports means that with Andorra airport transfers by shuttle coach, minibus, or even taxi airport transfers that Andorra remains a low-cost but high quality skiers’ choice.
